ALBUM RELEASE: Aaron McDonnell "Get Gone"

Ameripolitan recording artist, Aaron McDonnell, releases his follow-up album, Get Gone, off the heels of 2015’s classic-country EP, Battle Bend. His latest effort finds McDonnell honing his talents in the Texas hill country with a more natural approach and pop sensibilities not found in previous material. “It’s not overdone. I just wrote some songs and we almost immediately recorded them,” says McDonnell. He’s joined by a crew of tried-and-true professionals, including Bob Hoffnar (pedal steel), Matt Wiley (lead guitar), Morgan Patrick Thompson (bass), Timmy Campbell (drums), and Aaron’s wife, Dani McDonnell (harmonies).
The Austin-based crooner wasn’t born in Texas, but McDonnell got there as fast as he could! Originally hailing from Seattle, Aaron joins the ranks of impressive, singer-songwriters like Zoe Muth and Darci Carlson. Complete with a custom-fitted hat, his music fits right in to the heart of Texas with songs for dingy barrooms or dancehalls steeped in tradition. It’s no wonder that Aaron and Dani relocated to Austin to pursue music and chronicled the journey in song with “I’m Broke.” With a voice to compliment hopeful lyrics reminiscent of a cool Alan Jackson song, it’ll get you back to the basics of love in no time.
“A Cold One,” gleams as a broken-hearted, beer-drinkin’ anthem worthy of a Hank Williams Jr. pre-game. It leads off, saluting famed East Austin dive, The White Horse, where dancers often burn the extra calories two-stepping to this swinging tune.
Title track and personal favorite of McDonnell’s, “Get Gone,” recalls a Dwight Yoakam Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. era. He shares, “this time around I just tried not to over-think things and let it flow.” The guitar drives a melody that will linger with you long after it ends. And much like the lyrics, the song beckons you to seek what’s next.
The record rounds out and sizzles with “Keep The Home Fires Burnin’” and “We Will Fall.” In true, honky-tonk fashion, McDonnell waltzes through tales of love and lust.
Whether writing over coffee or piecing together the perfect phrases documented in his phone, Aaron pulls from life experiences – some totally true and some embellished. He’s cutting his teeth alongside modern artists, like Sam Outlaw and Flatland Calvary. One thing’s for sure: you’ll be hearing a lot more from him.
